Journalist steps out of line with Cole Caufield at Johnny Gaudreau's funeral

The hockey world suffered one of its greatest tragedies last month, with the horrific and untimely loss of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau, who last played for the ECHL with the Worcester Railers in the 2021-22 season. The two were cycling when Sean Higgins, a man in his 40s, struck the two riding on making an illegal pass while intoxicated. Both left behind children and a pregnant wife the night before they would appear at their younger sister's wedding.

Both Gaudreau brothers just had their funeral service, with several NHL players, primarily from the Columbus Blue Jackets, in attendance. However, media personnel also kept close, with some stepping beyond the line of what is appropriate. One journalist shouted out toward Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield for a comment. Provided his face, it is reasonable to say he was not pleased.

Cole Caufield idolized Johnny Gaudreau and made it clear when he changed his jersey number to #13 to honor the late player. There is no doubt he, nor any reasonable person, would not want this period of mourning to become a press frenzy for the grieving. He did, however, take a moment after the service to talk to reporters with questions. Whether or not they shouted at him to get a comment remains unknown.
