There is interest in serving the memory of the two Gaudreau brothers in hockey, and among the ideas in discussion is renaming one of the most prestigious awards at the NHL for Johnny Gaudreau. The suggestion? Replace the Lady Byng Trophy with a new "Johnny Gaudreau Trophy."
It is one of the most popularly floating proposals online that has, as a matter of fact, triggered a number of petitions now demanding that the NHL's annual honor for the most gentlemanly player be named in Johnny Gaudreau's name for the standard of excellent sportsmanship he showed with the Flames and Blue Jackets.
This could be a great opportunity, as the Lady Byng approaches its 100th birthday, but this all just feels a little too hard to pass up. It would not only be a celebration of Johnny Gaudreau's career, but it would also be an opportunity to reset how the award would be decided upon. Currently, journalists vote on who gets it based on a number of factors, including penalty minutes taken. Many say players themselves, through the NHLPA, should have the final say, which is the approach taken with a number of other awards.
