John Tavares doesn't like the Canada Revenue Agency, and it appears neither do they. Tavares owes them millions, and may now be forced to flee the country.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares, replaced this year by Auston Matthews, is in a legal dispute with the Canada Revenue Agency. The matter involves his $15.25 million signing bonus from 2018, against which the CRA wants to collect taxes.
Tavares claims he should be taxed under American citizenship, not the almost 46 percent tax rate applied in Canada since he was still a U.S. citizen when he inked his $77 million contract with the Leafs.
However, as it seems from the Maple Leafs' news outlet "Editor in Leaf", the chances of John Tavares losing the case are big. If liable, it could be enough to make him look at playing his hockey in a more tax-friendly U.S. state like Florida or Tennessee when the time comes to negotiate his next contract.
Via Editor in Leaf:

If the next ruling comes down against him, which it most certainly will, Tavares could be discouraged to re-sign in Toronto. He may opt to sign with an American team, preferably one in Florida, where the tax rate is much lower [...]

If and when the hammer comes down on Tavares, Canadian NHL teams' lawyers will need to work over time in order to ensure that future contracts eliminate the possibility of issues such as the one Tavares currently faces.
