After a season of ups and downs in 2023/24, Patrik Laine is seemingly on his way out of Columbus, and after scoring 48 goals in the 111 games the previous two years with the team, he's still got plenty of value. So now that raises the question, what is the holdup in getting a deal done to move Laine and continue the youth movement in Columbus?
That question has now been answered, as not only would a hockey deal be tough to make for the team given his $8.7 million cap hit over the next two years, making him a tough sell for the Jackets.
That's not the main reason however, as the team are currently uncertain whether or not he can be traded, as he remains in the NHL's Player Assistance Program, and with Colubmus unsure if or when he will be released, they can't make any deals happen. If Laine can get back on the ice in 2024/25 and find his old form, there's no doubt he'll recoup his value, but for now, things remain uncertain, and until his future is cleared up, there's just no way a deal can be made.
