The self-proclaimed journalist who prematurely broke the Johnny Gaudreau tragedy has "parted ways" with the website he used to work for.
Tragedy came to the hockey world this morning with the awful report that Johnny Gaudreau had passed away. The 31-year-old, along with his brother Matthew Gaudreau, who was 30-years-old, died in a bicycle accident last night. A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.
With the hockey world in mourning, attention has now turned to the journalist who spread an unconfirmed report that served as the initial revealing of the tragedy. The reporter has come under fire from top names within the hockey community, among them Tony Androckitis.
A tip to aspiring sports journalists:
Some things just aren't worth being 'first' to report.
When it comes to the tragic death of an athlete, & to a lesser degree retirement from the game, just let the player/team/family release a statement & be the source to share that news.
You can have your story written and ready to release as soon as it becomes official.
There's literally nothing to gain from making that info public before it's appropriate.
To this effect, Flyers Nitty Gritty website that employed the journalist has moved to relieve the writer of his duties who posted the unconfirmed report.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Gaudreau family and to all families who have suffered from this tragedy. It is also a wake-up call into the integrity of journalism and to privacy. There have been reports that some fans have tried reaching the Gaudreau family directly last night to confirm Johnny's involvement in it.
It is important that at times like these, respect for privacy must be given to all people affected by this sad event.
