Connor McDavid is undoubtedly the best player in the NHL but some young players don't believe so.

Knies Fires A Shot At McDavid

Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Matthew Knies is currently participating in the 2023 Upper Deck Prospect Showcase. The showcase is for 35 rookies all over the NHL to display their talents.
In an interview, Knies shared his true thoughts on Auston Matthews and dissed Connor McDavid in the process.
Matthew Knies asked how good Auston Matthews is. «Pretty damn good. He's not just the best goal scorer in the NHL but he plays defense too. He's kind of the best overall player [in the NHL] in my eyes.»
Suggesting that anybody other than Connor McDavid is the best overall player in the world is simply ludicrous. Knies' comments also imply that McDavid does not play defense which he certainly does. While McDavid's defense is not Selke-level, it is not anything that holds him back.
One fan put it best when they said this:
McDavid is the best overall player and it isn't even close. His gap in offence between everybody else makes up for whatever defensive deficiency you think there may be
McDavid is simply too dominant. He has better numbers than Matthews in essentially every statistical category and even has scored more goals in a season than Matthews ever has.
McDavid's 2022-23 stat line: 82 GP-64 G-89 A-153 P

Matthews' 2022-23 stat line: 74 GP-40 G-45 A-85P

Is McDavid's defense so terrible that it makes up for a 60+ point gap? Understandably, Knies will always choose his teammate as the best overall player in the world but keeping it unbiased, he is simply incorrect.
