The Edmonton Oilers have struggled to start 2023-24, posting a 1-3-1 record through their first three games, and it's becoming evident that beyond their two biggest stars, this team has serious limitations.

A situation brewing?

One player beyond Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl that was meant to star for this team was Evander Kane, but through those five games, he's managed just one assist.
That lack of production is clearly being noted by the coaching staff, as Kane was demoted to the third line in their recent loss to the Winnipeg Jets, and it's safe to say that Kane wasn't too happy about it.

Calling out Jay Woodcroft

During the game, a visibly frustrated Kane was asked for comments on the move from his coach, and he responded with this:
Didn't play much in the first period so I thought, might as well get into a fight and take 7 or 8 minutes in the box.

Perhaps this is what Woodcroft was after when he demoted Kane, as he potentially looked to inspire his veteran forward, but unless he gets in under control, we could see some major issues arise in Edmonton.
