The Edmonton Oilers have struggled to live up to the lofty expectations set for their group this season. A new piece of evidence has shown that one of the major problems that has led to the lack of success might be Evander Kane.
Kane Showing Major Regression After Comeback From Major Injury
Last season Evander Kane's season was disrupted by his major wrist injury. He missed a significant amount of time and admitted when he came back he wasn't 100% yet. Whether it is the injuries or just age Evander Kane has regressed in a major way this season.
The Oilers have struggled to find consistency especially earlier in the year. One source believes that Kane is a major factor in this. Andy & Rono who run a hockey analytics site and model put a post on X regarding Kane.
Their model shows that while Kane's point production and goal-scoring have been solid his overall game has been a detriment to the Oilers. As mentioned he also takes up a significant portion of the Oilers cap space for this season.
What To Do With Struggling Kane?
The Edmonton Oilers remain over 10 points out of a playoff spot coming out of the holiday break. Evander Kane is rumored to be dealing with an unspecified injury that has kept him out of several practices this season.
If Kane continues to struggle the Oilers will have a decision to make. He is in just the second season of a 4-year deal. He also has a no-move clause in his contract. This means a trade is unlikely with Kane's play and potential injury.
If Kane is not going to be traded potentially letting him sit in the press box for a few games could do the trick. This would give Kane a mental reset as well as time to get healthy. The Oilers need to manage Kane for the long term and that could mean allowing him to get healthy.
