The Oilers faced a tough decision during training camp when they ultimately decided to place prosect Raphael Lavoie on waivers for the purpose of sending him to the AHL. Luckily for them, he cleared waivers and now the team may be reaping the rewards.

Lavoie Earns Player Of The Week

The Oilers prospect earned the AHL's player of the week award last week when he put up four goals and six points though three games.
Lavoie currently leads the Bakersfield Condors with seven points in five games. The team as a whole is off to its best start since joining the AHL in the 2015-16 season. Lavoie also lead the team in scoring last season when he put up 25 goals and 45 points in 61 games.

Lavoie Could Earn Call Up

At this point, the Oilers have few reasons to not call up Lavoie. He was one of the very last cuts during preseason as he impressed the coaching staff. Since he has already cleared waivers, he will not have to clear them again if the Oilers want to send him down. That is unless he sticks with the team long enough for his grace period status to expire.

Similarly, Lavoie is on an entry-level contract. The Oilers can actually afford to call him up. Something not all team can say at this point with the limitations of a flat, hard-cap NHL.
