This is a large part of the reason why McDavid has won the award three years in a row. Barring injuries, he will likely continue to be the favorite for this award going forward for at least the next five or six years.
The award is just another, relatively minor addition to his trophy cabinet. The 27-year-old super star has already amassed a collection of trophies that rivals players in the hall of fame. He has 5 art ross trophies, 3 Hart trophies, 4 Ted Lindsays, one Rocket Richard, and one Conn Smythe. Those are just his NHL accolades. He also has a huge number of awards from his junior career and international play including OHL rookie of the year, MVP, and playoff MVP. Add to that a collection of gold medals and you have a truly elite player among the elite players. At this point, there is just one trophy left that he has yet to win and it is the hardest one of all to win. Of course, that is the Stanley Cup.
