The Edmonton Oilers are facing a tough start in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Stars, and once again, their $9.5 million defenseman is right in the thick of it.
Darnell Nurse, who's been under intense scrutiny from the media for his subpar playoff performance and his reluctance to engage with reporters, just added to the Oilers' woes by scoring an own goal.
The trouble began just 58 seconds into the game when Wyatt Johnston capitalized on a rush while Nurse was defending to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.
Then, things went from bad to worse as a shot by Esa Lindell, following a faceoff win for Dallas, deflected off Logan Stankoven and then off the back of Darnell Nurse, extending the Stars ' lead to 2-0. This comes a game after Nurse saved a goal with his body.
The Oilers, already down 2-1 in the series also took 8:14 until registering their first shot on goal of the contest.
With this goal against him, Nurse's playoff differential dropped to -14, inviting further criticism from fans online.
It was a tough spot for the Oilers, but as true to their season, they overcame their nearly $10 million mistakes by punching back. First Corey Perry, led a rush which was punctuated by Ryan Mcelod who picked up the loose change to bring Edmonton with one.
Still it's not a great look for Edmonton see their highest paid defenseman struggle. Hopefully over the final two periods, Nurse delivers positively to make up for his mistakes.
