The Edmonton Oilers inked Leon Draisaitl to a historic deal on Tuesday, and now his General Manager has opened up on the incredible deal.

After weeks of speculation, the Edmonton Oilers finally got a deal done with star forward Leon Draisaitl, inking him to an eight-year deal that carries a cap hit of $14 million over that time.
It's a deal that's been a long time coming, with Connor McDavid's superstar teammate now being paid the richest deal in NHL history on a yearly basis, in a move that will earn new GM Stan Bowman plenty of praise after the criticism surrounding his signing. When asked about the contract, Bowman was full of praise for Draisaitl, and it appears as though it was his biggest priority when getting to Edmonton, with the deal now done for both parties.
«Leon is a super-talented player, a huge part of what we're doing, and he has been and will be for some time and that hasn't changed at all,» Bowman said. «I think it's really hard to find stars in the NHL, so when you have them, the goal is to keep them.

As for Draisaitl, he is understandably thrilled about his new deal, and when asked about it, he expressed his hope that Connor McDavid follows suit, although he reveals he told his All-Star teammate to do what is best for him.
While there were reports that Draisaitl could look to hit free agency next year and potentially move on, he revealed in his first interview since signing the deal that he loves the Oilers jersey, and while he's being paid handsomely to remain, he couldn't see himself playing elsewhere.
«I love nothing more than wearing that jersey.»
Ultimately, this pairing is a match made in heaven for both parties, and after a long time coming, it made sense to get this deal done, and if the team can keep McDavid too, they'll be a threat for years to come.
