The Edmonton Oilers have plenty of competition for their bottom-six, and now it appears one of their newest prospects is staking his claim for a spot.
While the Oilers still have all of their biggest names healthy in the top-six, the way that the bottom-six will eventually shape up isn't quite clear at this point, with plenty of names fighting for starting roles. The team have added Mike Hoffman on a PTO and brought in prospect Matthew Savoie from Buffalo, but it appears as though it's Vasily Podkolzin that may be winning the race to a spot on the fourth line.
While lines early in camp can be simply indications of the team trying new things, Podkolzin has slotted in alongside Derek Ryan and Corey Perry on that fourth line at training camp, and it may be a sign of things to come. The 23-year old prospect hasn't been able to crack the lineup of the Vancouver Canucks for several years now, but it simply hasn't happened, with his best season coming back in 2021/22 with 14 goals in 79 solid games.
Now, he's got a brand new opportunity in Edmonton, with Sportsnet's Mark Spector full of praise for the former first-round draft pick.
Oh yeah as hockey people say, Podkolzin has all the tools.
But he's still working on the tool box, somehow lacking in confidence despite an excellent frame (six-foot-one, 190 pounds), first-round skills, and an easy smile that makes you quietly hope he finds success.
At this point, the Oilers are full of veterans whose ceiling is well known at this point, but given the upside of Podkolzin, he may be worth the risk when the regular season arrives, so keep a close eye on this story moving forward for the Oilers.
