The Edmonton Oilers had one of the best seasons in franchise history in 2023/24, but after breaking out, we won't see an extension for star Evan Bouchard.

Despite their incredible run to the Stanley Cup Finals, the Edmonton Oilers had more questions than answers heading into the 2024 off-season, and now it's likely going to hinder discussions with an emerging star. With the team needing a new General Manager and to potentially deal with 2025 UFA Leon Draisaitl, it has now been reported that they will put an extension for blue liner Evan Bouchard on the back burner for now.
I'm told it's unlikely the Oilers & Evan Bouchard (RFA: 2025 w/ arb rights; UFA: 2027) will discuss an extension this summer.

EDM More pressing things to address (GM, Draisaitl, McDavid).

Bouchard High likelihood of building off Norris 5th place & starring in the playoffs.
The 24-year old isn't slated to hit unrestricted free agency until the summer of 2027, so the team have time to lock up a deal, but if his value continues to grow, he may ultimately price himself out of Edmonton. That all depends on his play moving forward and how the team deal with UFA years of both Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, but right now, the GM spot in Edmonton is a tough one, as they've got some huge calls to make moving forward.
