The Edmonton Oilers will start the 2024/25 season without Evander Kane, and now there's plenty of questions as to why this has all been put off for so long.

After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that Evander Kane will need surgery soon, and it will cost him training camp and very likely some of the 2024/25 regular season in Edmonton. However, there remains plenty of optimism that Kane will be healthy enough to return by January.
Now, the question has been asked by reporter Jim Matheson as to why it took so long for the surgery to be confirmed, especially if it's been publicly speculated for quite some time.
«Why wait until now for the surgery, which, if he's out three months, would have him returning sometime in January after practices and such.»
Matheson somewhat answers his own question shortly after, speculating that it may have been Kane himself that didn't want to interrupt his summer with surgery, while both parties may have looked at rest as the best option going forward.
«Presumably, Kane, his agent Dan Milstein, and the Oilers talked it over and agreed on rest first before last-ditch surgery. Maybe Kane just didn't want surgery in his downtime in the summer months. Kane has to sign off on any medical procedure.»

Whatever the case, it now appears he'll miss at least a few months and will head to LTIR, giving the Oilers the opportunity to use that significant cap space to make some more big moves. With nothing but a Stanley Cup as the goal this season, this latest distraction could play a negative role for the Oilers this season, but if Kane gets healthy in time for a significant run to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, all will likely be forgotten.
