The Edmonton Oilers are facing some major hurdles when it comes to the salary cap, and Derek Ryan may have to be sent down to the AHL because of it.

The Oilers got some relief yesterday when they traded Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks, and forward Evander Kane is expected to be placed on LTIR following an off-season surgery. Despite these moves, the Oilers are still expected to be over next seasons salary cap, meaning they could send one of Ty Emberson, Derek Ryan, or Connor Brown to the AHL.

Emberson, who was acquired in the Ceci trade, has had some success playing under Kris Knoblauch in the AHL, and will likely see lots of NHL action this season. On the other hand, the Oilers have a surplus of forwards, meaning Ryan is most likely to be sent down.
Ryan, 37, has become a fan favourite in Oil Country for his gritty, hard nosed style of play, and it would hurt seeing him be sent down after coming so close to a Stanley Cup victory, but hockey is a business and the Oilers need to have the best roster possible come opening day.
According to well known insider Mark Spector, the Oilers will be making an announcement about the futures of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway sometime today. Their decisions on the offer sheets will most definitely dictate how the rest of the Oilers off-season plays out, and wether or not Derek Ryan will need to be sent to the AHL.
