Both the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to compete for the Stanley Cup, but could both teams make a trade that includes Nick Robertson?

As the 2024-25 season draws near, day by passing day, both the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs are restlessly waiting to relive their Stanley Cup glory after decades. That would be the year 1990 for the Oilers, while it would be a well-documented dry spell since 1967 for the Maple Leafs. Among the many hopes, too, is the possibility that the teams engage in a trade involving Nick Robertson, a young, disgruntled forward looking for a change of scenery who's in desperate need of a reboot after being underutilized in Toronto.
Nick Robertson has not kept it a secret that he wants out of Toronto, where he has grown increasingly frustrated with a minimal role over the past few seasons. The Oilers need to strengthen their bottom-six forward group and could use Robertson as a real asset. His two-way game could provide Edmonton with the depth they are so desperately lacking and would make him far more serviceable in the lineup than players like Derek Ryan currently getting ice time.
With his restricted free agent status and injury history, the trade value of Nick Robertson is at an all-time low, but that may just be the opening the Oilers need to pick him up on the cheap, perhaps for a mid-round draft pick and a prospect. The Oilers, with just under $1 million in cap space, could lock in Robertson on a bridge deal and provide him with the fresh start he's looking for. For Robertson, such a move keeps him out of the Toronto fold. This could prove to be a pretty smart play by the Oilers once training camp gets underway.
