The Blues pulled a stunning move by putting in offer sheets for two Oilers youngsters,
Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. GM, Doug Armstrong stunned the hockey world by offering Broberg $4.58 million, viewed as an overpay by Edmonton who offered him $1.3 million. Holloway received $2.3 million, above the Oilers view at $1.8.
ST Louis offered the moon, as Broberg's was a dollar shy of what would require a first-round pick in compensation, slotting in as a second round pick and Holloway's was right at the max for a third-rounder.
Broberg, a 23-year-old defenseman, spent most of last season in the AHL but made his mark when called up for the playoffs. Holloway, chipped in as a reliable bottom six forward during both the regular season and playoffs. Both were supposed to be part of their future, but with the Blues stepping in, things changed.
We also must remember GM, Jeff Jackson, had gone all-in by that point in the Summer, signing an array of veterans on July 1st. The salary cap was maxed out, so when the Blues came knocking, their hands were tied It's a tough pill to swallow, but that's the business side of hockey.
