The Edmonton Oilers have struggled this season to find a consistent option when it comes to goaltending. In the coming days, rumors are indicating that the Oilers will sign a well-regarded goalie prospect to help with these issues going forward.
Oilers Expected To Sign Top Goalie Prospect
A new report from late last night has confirmed that there is a plan in place for the Edmonton Oilers to sign goaltending prospect Connor Ungar. Ungar who has been playing in USports has been outstanding this season.
Have heard from several sources that standout U SPORTS G Connor Ungar will sign an NHL contract with the Edmonton Oilers and be assigned to the minors.
He had a .932 SV% as an OUA rookie and made 41 saves vs. UNB.
Ungar will go from Brock University likely to either the AHL or ECHL to finish out the season. At age 22 Ungar still has plenty of development left ahead of him where he could end up as an impact player at the NHL level.
Oilers Have Decisions To Make In Goal This Offseason
While Ungar is a promising player the jump from USports to professional hockey will be a big one. He likely would need several minor-league seasons before being ready. The Edmonton Oilers are in a position to win now and cannot likely wait for Ungar to come along.
With their current goaltending options Stuart Skinner, Jack Campbell, and Calvin Pickard the level of play has just not been good enough. Skinner is still young and has dealt with injuries a bounce-back next season could be on the horizon. However, the Oilers might want to start going shopping for their solution in the net.
As this season comes to a close and the Oilers begin making changes to their roster it will be fun to see if goaltender is a priority. The stars that lead the Oilers have shown they are ready to make a run and a top-level goaltender could be the missing link.
