The Edmonton Oilers announced a new GM on Wednesday, and now he's already made a major statement on one of the teams biggest stars.
Leon Draisaitl's pending free agency has been a huge story in Edmonton for quite some time now, but according to new General Manager Stan Bowman, he'd like to get things wrapped up soon. While being announced on Wednesday, the veteran GM revealed his desire to keep Draisaitl in Edmonton for a very long time to come;
"Leon is a star player and he's top priority for me. I want Leon to be an Oiler for life," via Preston Hodgkinson of Daily Hive.
Over the past five years, Draisaitl has become arguably the second best player in the NHL, being a consistent force alongside Connor McDavid, and it's been well known for quite some time that the team want him to be an Oiler for a long time. Recently, insider David Pagnotta has predicted that the Oilers could be closing in on an extension for No. 29 as well;
«They're going to continue their discussions with respect to an extension. Unless something has changed, since, I guess, the start of the playoffs, it's more likely to see an Auston Matthews-esque-type extension. «Four, five-year deal. Or, anywhere between a three to five-year extension versus a full eight," said Pagnotta.
When he eventually does sign a new deal, Draisaitl is expected to become the highest paid player in the NHL, and from all indications, that payday will come in Edmonton.
