The former head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, Todd McLellan, has emerged as a potential serious candidate to land the head coach position in the Ottawa Senators' organization.

The Senators, currently led by interim head coach Jacques Martin, are having yet another disappointing season, falling short to reaching their goal of making it to the playoffs. Steve Staios, president of hockey operations and general manager in Ottawa, opened up in a new interview about the process of hiring a new head coach.

McLellan was fired earlier this season by the Los Angeles Kings, where he had a 23-15-10 record. In 1,144 career games as a coach in the NHL, for the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings, he has 598 wins.
Garrioch mentioned that Staios respects McLellan and his work. However, the reporter added that the team missed the playoffs six times in the last nine years.

Here's what he said:
"The process has started. We have a list of people. We want to be patient with our approach because things do change into the off-season."

"We want to make sure that we have all the information that's afforded to us to make the decision on bringing in the best coach for this group at this point in time."

"There's a lot of work that's going to go on behind behind the scenes and trying to identify exactly, not only who the head coach is but also to build out the coaching staff in the right way."

"Jacques [Martin], Alfie [Daniel Alfredsson] and the rest of the group have done a good job laying the foundation for our young group moving forward. You can see the details and habits are getting there. I feel confident that it's going to pay off."

While Jacques Martin should keep his functions for the rest of the season, don't be surprised if the organization makes a move early in the summer.
A few teams will be looking for a new head coach after this season, and candidates will be taken quickly. The Sens will need to hurry if they want to get the best one available.
Stay tuned.
