Edmonton Oilers winger Zach Hyman hit a new milestone today as he scored his 50th goal of the season. It is the first time he's hit the 50 goal mark in his career and it showed as his teammates celebrated with him.
Hyman hits fifty goal season with powerplay tally
The Oilers winger has had his best goal-scoring season of his career this season as playing on a line with Connor McDavid has unlocked a new level for the 31-year-old. Today he accomplished a serious milestone as he scored his 50th goal of the season. This is not only his first career 50-goal season, but it is his first 40-goal season as well. His previous career high came last season when he found the back of the net 36 times.
Hyman hits 50! 🚨
For the first time in his NHL career, @ZachHyman has reached the 50-goal plateau!
The moment was extra special for Hyman who has been an underdog throughout his journey in hockey. What made it extra cool was the fact that his teammates were so excited for him. Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard in particular were showering Hyman in love after the goal.
Zach Hyman, on his journey to becoming a 50-goal NHL scorer at age 31:
"I was never the best player on my team (as a kid) and nobody thought I was going to continue progress. Just continue to hit little milestones and continue to work really hard and just believe in yourself."
Of course, one team's loss is another team's gain. The Edmonton Oilers pounced on the opportunity to sign Hyman, giving him a seven-year contract that has not-so-quietly become one of the best value deals in the entire NHL. The Oilers are lucky to have Hyman on such a team-friendly deal as both Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are coming towards the end of their deals. Both players are due substantial raises which could make it very difficult for the team to keep this core together in the long-run. One thing is for sure though, Zach Hyman is going to be an Oiler for a long time.
