The Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens have been chatting about Rutger McGroarty, with Montreal supposedly offering a former first-rounder in return.
Rutger McGroarty, who the Jets picked 14th overall back in 2022 wants to play in the NHL now. However, the Jets want him to spend a year in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose coming off his NCAA season from Michigan in a year that also saw him lead USA to a gold medal at the 2024 World Juniors. This standoff likely means McGroarty will be traded this summer, potentially bringing in key assets for Winnipeg.
According to reports, Canadiens GM Kent Hughes offered the man they picked 12 selections later after McGroarty, 2022 first round pick (26th overall) Filip Mesar, a 2025 first-round pick and a «young defenseman», possibly Justin Barron or Jordan Harris. However, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff turned it down.
According to information circulating overseas, Filip Mesár was offered as part of a trade aimed at acquiring Rutger McGroarty from the Winnipeg Jets. However, in addition to the Slovak youngster, Montreal would also have to add a draft pick from the Panthers or Flames in 2025 and a young defenseman, perhaps Justin Barron or Jordan Harris. However, Winnipeg seems to be rejecting Kent Hughes' various offers for now.
