Recently former NHL goaltender Carey Price joined the UnHammered Podcast and spoke about his struggles with alcohol addiction and seeking treatment since retiring.
Carey Price was one of the best goalies of his generation while playing for the Montreal Canadiens. This type of high level performing athlete comes with a lot of pressure to perform. For Carey Price that pressue ended up leading to an addiction problem that followed him for much of his career.
I've always been kind of a good time Charlie, you know hanging out with the boys, admitted Price.
Carey Price never saw his habits as a problem until he began to build a family life with his wife and kids and it began to impact his ability to be a father.
It wasn't until later, I think especially when you start bringing in a different aspect into your life, like kids, you have more responsibilities, said Price. At a certain point I was like 'I need to make my family my priority and my own health my priority.
Finally Carey Price says that things reached a tipping point after going to the Stanley Cup Finals. After the loss Carey Price had surgery and during that time he realized he had a need to go to rehab for his addiction.
We had just gone to the Cup Finals, we had just lost in the Cup Finals, I had just gone through a surgery, there was a lot of things going on in my life that I think pushed me over the edge as that summer went on.
After checking himself into rehab Carey Price spent 30 days getting himself better.
I was there for 30 days, said Price of the treatment center he attended. The facility I was at was a lot of self-reflectiveness, self-awareness which was really good for me.
Now reaching the two year mark of being sober Carey Price feels comfortable being himself and is proud of the progress he has made.
The further along I went along with this, you just feel more comfortable being yourself," said Price of being sober for two years.
While Carey Price might no longer be an elite athlete in the NHL he is living a life he was not able to while playing in the NHL. Enjoying time with his family and showing the rest of the world that it is okay to seek help.
