After a year full of problems away from the ice, Patrik Laine is looking to get back onto the ice in 2024/25 and get back to his career best, but as of right now, all signs point to that not being with Columbus. While there's been plenty of speculation online since his departure from the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program, it's becoming clear that Montreal are the only suitor for Laine, with Kent Hughes eager to pair him with their young stars to continue building this roster moving forward.
However, the Canadiens GM isn't interested in taking on Laine's entire deal, and now Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell has revealed he's very open to making that happen.
It's highly unlikely that Columbus' new GM will want to retain 50% or even close to that, but even if he takes back $2 million a year over the final two years of his deal, the pieces could start coming together. With training camp nearing, the framework of a deal will continue coming together, and if Montreal can land Laine, it could be one of the best deals under the already impressive tenure of Kent Hughes as General Manager.
