Marc Staal has announced he is retiring from the NHL and will take on a role as a Player Development Assistant with the New York Rangers.

Marc Staal might be hanging up his skates, but he's far from done with the game.
The Thunder Bay native who is 37 years old, announced his retirement after a 17-year career in which he logged more than 1,100 games played in the NHL. His next chapter begins where it all originated, though, as he joins the New York Rangers as an assistant in player development.
Marc Staal has spent 13 seasons with the Rangers after the Rangers drafted him 12th overall back in 2005. He has since suited up for the Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, and most recently, the Philadelphia Flyers.
This past season, he played 35 games for the Flyers while adding one goal and four assists to his total before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
He wraps up an illustrious career with 234 points in 1,136 games, on 53 goals, and 181 assists.
He's not the only Staal making headlines, as the oldest of the Staal brothers, Eric, retired in July after signing a one-day deal with the Hurricanes, while younger brother Jordan is currently their captain.
