Insider Drops Bomb as Former Captain could be set to become General Manager of a Canadian Team
Senators Fire Dorion, Look for a New General Manager
Now that the Ottawa Senators have fired Pierre Dorion, their quest for a new general manager has officially started.
Earlier today, they named Steve Staios as their interim GM while they look for Dorion's successor.
As many rumors suggested Peter Chiarelli would make a comeback in the NHL with the Senators, Elliotte Friedman thinks there's another name in the hat.
Surprising Contender for the Next GM in Ottawa
An interesting name entered the rumor mill.
Friedman, in the latest 32 Thoughts episode, said he believes Jason Spezza would be a great candidate.
"There's been a lot of talk about Peter Chiarelli, but another name I'd throw in there is Tampa Bay director of hockey operations Mathieu Darche. Darche interviewed in Montreal while Andlauer still owned part of the Canadiens, so there is familiarity.
Another person suggested Jason Spezza. Teams with legit candidates aren't always willing to give them up in-season. It will be up to Staios, but another possibility is the organization adding a 'veteran hockey presence' in a non-GM role.
There is going to be a ton of interest, despite the loss of this draft choice. The team is on the way up, Dorion left them far from barren."
Spezza currently works in Pittsburgh as Kyle Dubas' assistant with the Penguins.
Having the opportunity to be GM could entice him to part ways with Dubas. But considering Spezza followed him from Toronto, it wouldn't be an easy decision.
Spezza's ties with the Senators are still strong. He played 10 years in Ottawa, where he was drafted 2nd overall in 2001. He was the team captain for the 2013-14 season.
The former player could be a great candidate for the job, but many seem to think he could gain from staying with Dubas a few more years. He retired from playing only a year ago, and getting management experience from Dubas could help him in his post-playing career.
