Senators Fire Head Coach Yesterday After Struggling to Start Year
The Ottawa Senators are on the hunt for their next bench boss after firing DJ Smith yesterday. Fans were calling for Smith to be fired for some time now, and they finally had those calls heard yesterday.
The Senators hired Jacques Martin as an interim replacement for Smith while they search for his replacement. They also brought in former legendary Senator Daniel Alfredsson as an assistant coach to help with the transition.
Marlies Head Coach Reportedly Frontrunner for Senators Opening
Now, a report has surfaced from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun stating that John Gruden of the Toronto Marlies is the rumoured frontrunner for the position of head coach for the Senators.
"If you're looking for a frontrunner, league executives have told Postmedia in the last couple of weeks that the top candidate may be John Gruden, who was named the head coach of the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies (the top farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs) before the start of the season."
Gruden is a former Senators player and currently heads the Toronto Marlies. It is his first season with the Marlies, as he helped the Boston Bruins as an Assistant Coach last season to one of their best regular seasons in NHL history.
The Senators, while likely wanting to get things settled and back on track this season, probably don't want to rush this decision.
