Flyers Reportedly sign Matvei Michkov to Intensify Calder Trophy Race

The Philadelphia Flyers reportedly signed Matvei Michkov, the 7th-overall pick from the 2023 draft. This move intensifies the competition for the Calder Trophy, given to the league's top rookie.
Michkov, a debated pick due to his KHL contract, has terminated his deal with SKA St. Petersburg to join the NHL.
I'm told that it looks like Matvei Michkov is leaving SKA and will be joining the Philadelphia Flyers.
Last season on loan at HK Sochi, he tallied 19 goals and 41 points showing he's ready for the next step.
Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks, holding the 4th pick in last year's draft, secured Will Smith from Boston College. Smith, set to debut in the NHL this season, adds to the rookie talent pool alongside college and USA World Junior gold medal-winning teammate Cutter Gauthier, traded to the Anaheim Ducks.
The San Jose Sharks rank #9 in the NHL prospect pool. GM Mike Grier has started to shape the team, adding promising prospects like Will Smith and Quentin Musty. With the potential addition of Macklin Celebrini, Sharks fans have a bright future ahead.

The race for the Calder Trophy promises to be wild, with several candidates near the top of the list. It will not be like last season's race which saw Chicago Blackhawks phenom Connor Beadrd run away with the award. Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, if Boston University's Macklin Celebrini decides to join the NHL after being drafted first overall to the Sharks, the Calder Trophy race could be one of the most exciting in league history.
