The Pittsburgh Penguins aren't the team that Evgeni Malkin sees himself retiring with, as he'd rather do it in Russia instead.
Malkin is 37, and has two years remaining on his Penguins contract. The team isn't likely going to win a Stanley Cup in the next two years, so Malkin is likely ready to accept that and move on. He will either need to be traded if he wants a shot at a Stanley Cup in the NHL again, or pack his bags and head home to Russia to finish off his career.
"It's hard to make plans about a return," he said. "I still have two years left on my contract with Pittsburgh. I need to play these two years and see how it goes. The main thing is no injuries, and if, as Pavel Datsyuk says, there's a fire burning, you can't go out and do the number without it."
This is quite the change of tune from Malkin, as barely only two years ago he publicly stated that he wanted to retire as a Penguin, but now he seems to want to do it in Russia instead.
Evgeni Malkin said today he would like to retire as a #Penguins player. But.
"I understand it's a business. I love this city, I love these fans so much. But if the team wants young blood and new guys & says you should move on', I'm fine.
I hope I retire here" @KDKA
Malkin is showing no signs of wear, as he has played in all 82 games for the past two seasons in a row. He finished last season with 27 goals and 67 points. Despite these stats, he likely prefers to end his playing days in Russia.
