The San Jose Sharks have been in a rebuild for the past few years, and now former GM Doug Wilson has admitted to the biggest mistake of his career in San Jose.
Doug Wilson overall did a solid job in San Jose, taking this team all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, but unfortunately, they never took the final step despite building a star studded squad led by Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski. In a recent interview, Wilson, who retired from his role with the Sharks in 2022 has looked back on his time, admitting that his biggest mistake as General Manager involved the latter;
"Sometimes, you can overanalyze things," Wilson said. "But I, as a GM, with my love for Pavs and realizing how special he was, I look back, I probably should have dismissed historical analysis of contracts for players that age and said screw it."
"I was the GM. I take full responsibility," Wilson said. "I wish I'd just said, you know what, he is that aberration? He proved that he is."
As Wilson mentioned, Pavelski had a fantastic second stage of his career with the Dallas Stars after departing San Jose, tallying 307 points in 369 games over five years with the Stars.
"Joe Pavelski is a player that we should be so proud of that we had the good fortune of getting him and having him as long as we did," Wilson said. "Pav beat all the odds getting drafted in the seventh round and playing at the level he did until he was 40," Wilson said.
Hindsight is 20/20 however, and very few teams around the league expected Pavelski to continue his play at such a level, but as he retires, he will ultimately look back on his career in San Jose with plenty of joy, as Pavelski and Wilson were key parts of a bright spot in the franchise history of the Sharks.
