The Seattle Kraken and GM Ron Francis have locked in their franchise centerpiece, Matty Beniers, with a seven-year extension worth $7.14 million per year.
Beniers burst onto the scene, winning the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie after snagging 24 goals and 57 points in 80 games during the 2022-23 season. He endured a sophomore slump, finishing with 15 goals and 37 points in 77 games-but he remains a key piece for the Kraken as they continue to build their identity and enter their fourth season as a franchise.
Drafted second overall in 2021 as the franchise's maiden selection, the 21 year-old is already a fan-favorite. He's known for his ability to shut down opponents and create plays off the rush, even if the team doesn't always generate a ton of chances when he's on the ice.
Yet during his standout rookie year, Seattle outscored their opponents 63-41 when he participated at five-on-five, and they controlled over 52% of the expected goals. That's the kind of impact you want from your top center.
Beniers debuted for the Kraken in April 2022, after his stint at Michigan in the NCAA. He didn't waste time making an impact, recording three goals and nine points in just 10 games to close out the regular season. Then, he posted seven points in 14 playoff games during Seattle's run to the second round in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which included their first series victory against the reigning champions, Colorado Avalanche in a seven game shocker.
Now with their main middle man locked up prior to his third season in the show, Seattle fans have every reason to be excited about what's to come.
