The Toronto Maple Leafs' offseason focus has been on extending Auston Matthews and William Nylander's contracts. After Matthews recently signed his extension, attention turned to Nylander.

Elliotte Friedman Confirms Nylander's Situation

In a recent interview with the Halford and Brough in the Morning show, Elliotte Friedman confirmed the Leafs had explored trading Nylander in the past few weeks.
Friedman stated the following:
"I think the Maple Leafs just decided [to keep him for this year] I think they looked at trading him. I don't think they liked what was out there,» Friedman said. «I mean, he did score 40 goals last year. He's a really talented guy and in the playoffs, he was involved in a couple of their really successful moments against Tampa Bay. I think they know that and recognize that, they didn't like what was out there [in the trade market]."

Should Fans Worry About Nylander?

Despite it being early in the year, initial signs aren't positive. Reports indicate significant differences in contract expectations. Alongside trade considerations, concerns arise.
If the current trade market doesn't match the Leafs' needs, the situation could worsen as Nylander's contract continues. Failing to secure a trade or extension could impact General Manager Brad Treliving's start. This concern compounds with doubts about Auston Matthews' deal, putting Treliving in a tough spot.
The next weeks are crucial for the Toronto Maple Leafs' future. If they are unable to move Nylander or lock him up, they could lose one of their most valuable assets for nothing.
