Matthew Knies Expected To Suffer Potential Setback This Week

NHL teams are putting the final touches on their rosters to be compliant for opening night. The Maple Leafs still have to make at least one more move and it could come at the expense of Matthew Knies.

According to one source, the expectation around the league is that Knies will be sent down by the Maple Leafs in the coming days.

The transaction as reported by Nick Richard would likely only be a paper transaction but would be a turbulent start to the NHL season for Knies.

The expectations for Matthew Knies are sky-high heading into the 2023-24 NHL season. After 1 point in 3 regular season games as well as 4 points in 7 playoff games Knies is looking to get off to a hot start in the NHL. In a season where he was also a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, everything went right for Knies.

Now it seems as though Knies will face adversity right off the rip with the Maple Leafs this season. If Timmins is put on LTIR like expected Knies will likely be back up quickly.

However, with the Maple Leafs tight against the salary cap Knies could be a casualty of cap management if he struggles early on. Being on a low salary and a two-way contract has its advantages but it also can mean the player is more likely to be sent up and down.
