Matthew Knies Expected To Suffer Potential Setback This Week
Matthew Knies exploded onto the scene with the Toronto Maple Leafs last spring. He was expected to take more steps forward this season in the NHL. Now reports have clouded his future with the Maple Leafs.
Knies Expected To Suffer Potential Setback
NHL teams are putting the final touches on their rosters to be compliant for opening night. The Maple Leafs still have to make at least one more move and it could come at the expense of Matthew Knies.
According to one source, the expectation around the league is that Knies will be sent down by the Maple Leafs in the coming days.
Leafs fans should brace themselves to potentially see Matt Knies assigned to the AHL today or tomorrow.
It would be nothing more than a paper transaction to help them get cap compliant before possibly placing
Conor Timmins on LTIR. Knies will be in the opening night lineup.
The transaction as reported by Nick Richard would likely only be a paper transaction but would be a turbulent start to the NHL season for Knies.
Knies Looking To Prove He Belongs In The NHL
The expectations for Matthew Knies are sky-high heading into the 2023-24 NHL season. After 1 point in 3 regular season games as well as 4 points in 7 playoff games Knies is looking to get off to a hot start in the NHL. In a season where he was also a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, everything went right for Knies.
Now it seems as though Knies will face adversity right off the rip with the Maple Leafs this season. If Timmins is put on LTIR like expected Knies will likely be back up quickly.
However, with the Maple Leafs tight against the salary cap Knies could be a casualty of cap management if he struggles early on. Being on a low salary and a two-way contract has its advantages but it also can mean the player is more likely to be sent up and down.
It will be fascinating to see how Matthew Knies adjusts to a full NHL season.
