Auston Matthews has made one thing clear, he plans on being a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs forever if he can, and fans are ecstatic.

Auston Matthews has just become the first ever American born player to captain the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise. John Tavares has kindly decided to pass on the legacy to him, and Matthews couldn't be happier.
"I got chills, honestly," said Matthews of the call

Auston Matthews is referring to the phone call he received from John Tavares when he announced to him that he would be handing over the "C".
During the major captaincy change announcement that was made on Wednesday, Auston Matthews was asked about his future plans now that he's about to begin year one of the four year extension he signed. Leafs fans were very happy to hear his response.
"Well, I mean, I think that's the goal, is to be a Leaf for life. To win here, with my teammates, for this city. Those are always things that you kind of keep in the back of your mind. But they're also things that are kind of in the future as well.

I've loved every minute of being a Toronto Maple Leaf. Like I said, it's such a tremendous honour and you kind of take it one day at a time, but I hope that's the case."
The goal for Auston Matthews is to one day be able to hoist a Stanley Cup with the Leafs, but for now he is going to take it one day at a time and savor everything bit by bit regarding his new captaincy role.
Auston Matthews scored 69 goals and had 107 points in 81 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season.
