New trade option for Mitch Marner emerges involving infamous Rangers defenseman
A new trade proposal has Mitch Marner going to the New York Rangers in return for former 1st overall pick Alexis Lafreniere and physical defenseman Jacob Trouba.
This is not the first trade proposal or rumor that has cropped up around Mitch Marner this offseason. After the Leafs failed miserably in the playoffs once again, the rumor mill was in full swing as fans expected Marner to be gone within weeks. That no longer appears to be the case, but his future with the team is still in the air, leading to further speculation like this.
Maple Leafs Get:
Alexis Lafreniere
Jacob Trouba
Rangers Get:
Mitch Marner
Timothy Liljegren
Notably, in this proposal, Marner is not being traded alone. Rather, this trade can be seen as two separate one-for-one deals. Marner for Lafreniere, and Liljegren for Trouba. Thanks to the awesome reporting of Emily Kaplan, we already know that the Rangers have been trying to move Trouba this summer. but his no-trade protection has been a tough hurdle to overcome.
The Rangers have explored trading captain Jacob Trouba. It hasn't been easy, and he's exercising power from his 15-team no trade list.
A core issue: Jacob's wife, Kelly, is finishing medical residency in NY. This feature on the couple from 2022 explains a lot.
Furthermore, Trouba's decline in play over the past two seasons has his value at an all-time low. Even a one-for-one deal for Timothy Liljegren would likely be seen as a loss for the Leafs.
Should the Rangers trade Jacob Trouba?
...Can the Rangers trade Jacob Trouba?
With that being said, that puts the pressure on Lafreniere to make up for the difference in value of the players involved. Notably, he had the best season of his career last season, performing at or near a top-line level even in a middle-six role with the Rangers.
Alexis Lafrenière has made a huge step up in the last season offensively. In my eyes & also by underlying stats, Lafrenière played at 1st line offensive winger level. Awesome for Rangers!
Unfortunately though, he is still nowhere near Mitch Marner in terms of outright production. As such, this deal would likely be seen as a massive fleece for the Rangers. That does not necessarily mean that it can't happen though.
