The Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL have added goalie Mariah Fujimagari to their roster on a PTO. The talented 29-year-old netminder previously played in Sweden's Women's league.
"Player signed to pro tryout by Kalamazoo Wings: G Mariah Fujimagari/@Fujimagoalie (1-11-0 w/ a 4.52 GAA & .877 SV% + a shutout in 14 GP for @AIKishockey [women's team] in the @SDHLse [Sweden] last season). She's played pro for the last six seasons including four in North America."
Kalamazoo, which operates as the ECHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, has made history with this signing.
"Kalamazoo adds strength up front and in the crease with Yeamans and Fujimagari signings. "
Fujimagari, with her impressive height of 5'11", has a promising opportunity with the K-Wings.
With only Hunter Vorva currently under contract as a goaltender, it seems likely that Fujimagari could play a pivotal role in the team's future strategy. Joel Martin, the K-Wings' Head Coach, praised her dedication and skill, noting,
"Mariah is an athletic goaltender that battles on every shot and reads the play well"
Fujimagari commented:
"I couldn't be happier to join the K-Wings. I'm going to make sure to set the tone from the start with a solid performance every day. I'm most excited to be a part of the Kalamazoo community and skate in front of the amazing fans."
ECHL's Commitment to Gender Diversity
The ECHL has been a pioneer in promoting gender diversity within Men's Professional Hockey. The inclusion of female athletes in the ECHL's All-Star Game since 2020 exemplifies this commitment.
The ECHL also witnessed the likes of hockey legend such as Manon Rhéaume and Erin Whitten. While stars like Hayley Wickenheiser and Marie-Philip Poulin had invitations to join, they opted against it.
