The Canucks are off to a surprising start to their season. Their 8-2-1 record is good enough for 2nd in the Pacific Division and their 17 points ties them for 2nd in the NHL. Now they may be making themselves even better.
Canucks Are Buying
Reportedly the Canucks are very active in trade discussions as the team looks to find cost effective ways to reward their players for playing well while also setting them up for long term success. One team they could partner with is the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Canucks are reportedly looking for help on defense, particularly on the right side. After Filip Hronek the team is weak there. One defenseman that could help would be Columbus's Andrew Peeke. He's a big, right-shot defenseman with some pedigree as a former 34th overall pick. However, he could end up being a smaller piece of a much bigger deal.
Trade Speulation
One trade proposal includes Peeke as well as former 5th overall pick Kent Johnson. This is what it looks like.
To Vancouver: Andrew Peeke, Kent Johnson. To Columbus: Anthony Beauvilier, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, 2024 1st round pick.
Johnson might be a tough ask as a former 5th overall pick. However, he is already 21 and he hasn't established himself in the NHL yet. He is not as much of a slam dunk prospect as fans might think, given his draft position. There is a lot of uncertainty in this deal for both teams so Columbus might not want to take the chance either.
