The Jets have been locking down their core pieces and another veteran player is eyeing an extension in Winnipeg.

Niederreiter Eyes Extension

Since acquiring forward Nino Niederreiter in the middle of the 2022-23 season, the Swiss forward has impressed with the Jets scoring 22 points in 33 games as well as an additional four points in five playoff games.
With such solid production from a middle-six forward, the Jets would be keen on extending the 31-year-old for at least a couple of seasons. A recent report from The National Post revealed that Niederrieter's agent is heading to Winnipeg with the notion being that they will work out an extension.
Niederreiter's sentiment on the Jets and the city hasn't changed, sources said, and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has been made aware that Niederreiter wants his next contract to be in Winnipeg.

Cheveldayoff has already been busy with contract extensions this season, signing Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck to identical seven-year, $59.5 million contracts during Thanksgiving weekend.

Niederreiter Contract Projection

While Niederreiter is productive, he is also on the wrong side of 30. It is likely we will see Niederreiter sign a medium-length extension but the shorter the term, the higher the value he would want per year.
He currently makes $4 million which is worth his production. If he signed a shorter-term deal, he will likely look to make the same or even more. However, if the deal is over 4 years, he could take a pay cut which would pose a short-term benefit for the Jets but could be harmful down the road.
We will now wait to see what Niederreiter eventually signs but all signals point towards an imminent extension.
