The NHL has proposed some new rules officially as of Tuesday, but after an incident involving the Winnipeg Jets, one rule change has taken place effective immediately.

NHL to enforce new, intriguing rule involving the bench

During a recent matchup with the Minnesota Wild, one Winnipeg Jet accidentally cut a linesman as he waited on the boards for a line change, forcing the NHL to take action.
Effective immediately, players can't sit on boards awaiting line changes. A team will get warning first, then refs will be instructed to apply penalty that's already in rulebook. NHL feels it's not good hockey + dangerous. Linesman was cut by skate in Wild-WPG game by a Jet
This was obviously an accident and no harm was intended by the Jets player, but it's something that could happen at anytime, and with the incidents involving skates in recent years, it's a wise move from the NHL.
This may make line changes slightly longer for teams, but given the positive implications for safety, it's a rule change that makes sense, and while it may take some time to adjust, this is one that players likely won't be complaining about.
