Gary Bettman has shared his worry about the declining fan base in Winnipeg, which has sparked a discussion about the potential relocation of the team.
Bettman Comments on Declining Fan Base in Winnipeg
With the NHL actively being pursued by potential new owners to open up new franchise spots for expansion, it is always troubling to see Gary Bettman comment on the status of a franchise's fan base. Unfortunately for Jets' fans, he has done just that.
Chris Johnston has just revealed that Gary Bettman is heading to Winnipeg due to the drop in ticket sales, in order to meet with some of the Team's sponsors.
Chris Johnston on Insider Trading says NHL is monitoring the situation in Winnipeg, they have seen an above 30% drop in the last 3 years in their ticket base. Gary Bettman will be in Winnipeg on Tuesday to meet with some of the team's important corporate sponsors.
Jets Owner Is Not Happy With Decline and Thinks it is Unsustainable
Winnipeg Jets owner Mark Chipman has also commented on the decline in attendance, stating that the position they find themselves in is not sustainable. This is troubling news for Jets fans, as the trend doesn't appear to be changing any time soon.
"I wouldn't be honest with you if I didn't say, 'We've got to get back to 13,000,'" Chipman said. "This place we find ourselves in right now, it's not going to work over the long haul. It just isn't."
With so many cities vying for an NHL team to come, this is troubling news for the Jets. Could they be relocated again?
