During the final moments of yesterday's game between the Senators and the Sabres, captain Brady Tkachuk took issue with a move by Buffalo Sabres' Alex Tuch.
Tuch appeared to use his back to hit Tkachuk as he exited the zone. After the hit,Tkachuk quickly got on his feet, ready to confront Tuch.
However, Tkachuk's impulsiveness might cost him. Acting on his emotions, he perhaps didn't consider the potential consequences of initiating a fight so late in the game. It seems likely that Tkachuk will be benched for the upcoming game due to this altercation.
Imcoming Consequences for Tkachuk and the Senators
According to NHL rule 46.21, a player who instigates a fight in the last five minutes of the third period will face a one-game suspension.
On top of that, there are reports suggesting that the Senators Head Coach DJ Smith will be penalized with a $10,000 fine.
Bruce Garioch of Post Media reveals that the Senators are considering challenging the NHL's decision. However, given the evidence available, it might be an already lost battle for them.
"Per NHL rule 46.21, Brady Tkachuk is set to be suspended for 1 game for receiving an instigator penalty in the last 5 minutes of regulation, while Head Coach DJ Smith would receive a $10,000 fine.
#GoSensGo will be appealing this ruling, per @SunGarrioch."
Should Tkachuk's suspension be upheld, he won't be playing in Thursday's match against the New York Islanders. However, he'll be back in action on Saturday to compete against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
