During tonight's preseason game, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Pontus Holmberg took Ottawa Senators' Ridly Grieg out for the game, but was served a swift payback.

After a 6-5 overtime loss on Sunday, the Toronto Maple Leafs were hoping for a comeback in this evening's preseason matchup against the Ottawa Senators. One Leaf, however, seemed to get carried away, making a nasty move. Toward the end of the first period, Toronto forward Pontus Holberg approached Ottawa center Ridley Grieg from behind before throwing him down on the ice from over his shoulder. The 22-year-old forward, now recovering from the move, was not able to return to the ice for the remainder of the game.
Pontus Holmberg has 91 NHL regular-season games under his belt and is undoubtedly looking to be noticed by Maple Leafs staff. However, the Toronto forward has seemed to gather the wrong sort of attention, as NHL fans from any other fanbase online almost unanimously find this move unnecessarily dangerous.
While no immediate call was made on this ridiculous move, one Ottawa Senator chose not to let it slide. The 24-year-old forward Cole Reinhardt, who has only played in one NHL regular-season game, decided to drop the gloves with Pontus Holmberg at the beginning of the third period while the score was tied 1-1. While the Maple Leafs forward landed more blows against his opponent overall, Reinhardt pulled him onto the ice before game officials broke him up, seeming satisfied in laying down the law for his brutal attack on Ridly Grieg earlier in the game.
To make matters worse for Pontus Holmberg, the Toronto Maple Leafs have again fallen to the Ottawa Senators, losing 1-2 in regulation. They will have their next matchup on Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens. Hopefully, there will not be any more instances of overly-violent plays.
