The future of Phil Kessel in the NHL remains a topic of much speculation, with recent insights provided by NHL insider Chris Johnston.

Chris Johnston Sheds Light on Phil Kessel's NHL Aspirations

Phil Kessel, an experienced player and Stanley Cup Champion, is currently unsigned, raising questions about his future in the league. Despite the season being underway, Kessel is actively looking to join a team.
Chris Johnston has shared that Kessel is keen on continuing his NHL career. He has been keeping himself in shape and is ready to play, although he was close to signing a contract in October, which ultimately did not materialize.
"Phil has wanted to return the whole time, He was reluctant to go to a team's training camp on a tryout contract, so didn't do that. But, you know he's continued to skate. He's living in Arizona, keeping himself game ready. There have been ongoing discussions. There was something in October that was very close, like he was going to get a contract but that obviously didn't happen. The weeks become months, is it all for him?

"In his mind and heart, he hopes not, and so it's going to take one team who is serious enough to give him a chance. He is still the NHL's active ironman. He's just looking to sign somewhere and keep playing. If that team doesn't want to dress him on back to back nights or have him as an extra forward. I think he would be to some of those opportunities. Only time will tell if Phil Kessel is back in the NHL. But certainly it's his desire to get back there."

Cap Space Challenges for Kessel's NHL Return

A significant challenge for Kessel in securing a contract is fitting into a team's salary cap, especially this late in the season. Many teams have limited cap space or are reserving it for potential moves closer to the trade deadline.

Despite these hurdles, Kessel's experience and playoff pedigree make him an attractive option for teams seeking depth in their lower lines. His willingness to adapt to a team's cap constraints will likely be a key factor in his potential return to the NHL.
