The NHL released a league-wide memo today setting a new stance on pride tape. The decision could mark the beginning of a new era of NHL policy in which the league heavily restricts what players can say, do, or wear at official NHL events.

NHL Creates More Drama With Pride Tape Ban

The NHL has not received a ton of good press lately and that trend continues as the league announced their pride tape ban today. The league-wide memo heavily restricts what players can do when they are at league events.
"Players shall not be put in the position of having to demonstrate (or where they may be appearing to demonstrate) personal support for any Special Initiatives. A factor that may be considered in this regard includes, for example, whether a Player (or Players) is required to be in close proximity to any groups or individuals visibly or otherwise clearly associated with such Special Initiative(s)."

Supporters Of Pride Silenced

NHL teams are still allowed to hold pride nights under this new policy, they just cannot contain any of the things that have been hallmarks of past events. This may very well lead to situations where players feel like they cannot interact with and show support for their fans the way they would like as the league is likely going to be keeping a close eye on pride nights this year.
Some players may look to find loopholes in the new rules to show support. Regardless, the league has shown that their slogan, hockey is for everyone, is just as big of a joke as many fans have said it has been for years.
