The NHL released a league-wide memo today setting a new stance on pride tape. The decision could mark the beginning of a new era of NHL policy in which the league heavily restricts what players can say, do, or wear at official NHL events.
NHL teams are still allowed to hold pride nights under this new policy, they just cannot contain any of the things that have been hallmarks of past events. This may very well lead to situations where players feel like they cannot interact with and show support for their fans the way they would like as the league is likely going to be keeping a close eye on pride nights this year.
Some players may look to find loopholes in the new rules to show support. Regardless, the league has shown that their slogan, hockey is for everyone, is just as big of a joke as many fans have said it has been for years.
