Currently ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference after 20 games, the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL have a record of 10 wins, 9 losses, and 1 overtime loss. They have scored a total of 72 goals while conceding 73, positioning them squarely in the middle of the pack.
Turbulent Times for Swift Current Broncos
On November 14, the Swift Current Broncos made a significant announcement: Head Coach Devan Praught has been suspended indefinitely due to a breach of the WHL's conduct code. This news was delivered by Chad Leslie, the General Manager of the team.
The suspension stems from an incident involving Praught and Josh Fluker, a 17-year-old defenseman, during a practice session on Monday. Video footage shows Praught engaging in a physical confrontation with Fluker, including using his stick aggressively. The WHL's Security Network is currently reviewing this incident.
Devan Praught became the head coach in 2022, having previously served as interim coach after Dean Brockman's departure in October 2021.
Swift Current Adapts to Coaching Changes
In Praught's absence, assistant coach Taras McEwen will take over as interim head coach. This marks the second incident this season of a coach being reprimanded for violating the WHL's Code of Conduct, highlighting the league's commitment to maintaining high standards.
Further statements on the investigation will not be forthcoming from either the WHL or the Swift Current Broncos.
