Alberta has been chosen to host an international hockey tournament

Calgary is getting a new arena that is expected to be completed by the start of the 2026-27 NHL season, and now they are already reaping the rewards.
Alberta to host some major international tournaments
Before we get to that though, Hockey Canada has announced that the Rivalry Series, Hlinka Gretzky Cup and eventually the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championships will be coming to Alberta.
«Hosting international games and tournaments are critical to provide opportunities for our men's, women's and para athletes to develop and compete on the world stage, showcase our teams and communities, and inspire the next generation of participants and fans,» said Katherine Henderson, president and chief executive officer of Hockey Canada. «We are grateful that the Province of Alberta has made this significant investment to enable these events to be played on home ice, which will significantly benefit each of our programs, including our national teams that are preparing for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.»
Those tournaments are expected to take place throughout Alberta, but the crown jewel is the IIHF World Junior Championships, with further rumours that the event in 2027 will take place in Calgary's brand new arena.
World Juniors returns to Alberta
Before 2027, the event will be hosted by Ottawa in 2025 and Minneapolis/St. Paul in 2026 and eventually Alberta, giving fans all across the province the opportunity to see the best and the brightest young players take center stage.
NEWS: Hockey Canada announced today that the 2027 World Junior Hockey Championships will be hosted in Alberta. No exact city has been confirmed yet, but the expectation is for the tournament to be held in Calgary, following completion of the brand new arena that will be coming to the city.
