Details of Leon Draisaitl's new contract with the Edmonton Oilers revealed

It appears the waiting is over. A report from a credible source says Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers has a new deal in place and will sign as early as this week. The terms will make Draisaitl the highest paid player in the NHL.

According to the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, Leon Draisaitl and the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to an 8-year deal, with an average annual value of $14 million. That's slightly higher than the $13.5 million that was predicted, but not necessarily a huge surprise for the superstar.

NBC Boston did a breakdown of the highest paid players in the NHL for the 2023-24 season, which put Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche in the top position with a $12.6 million AAV. That's followed by Leon Draisaitl's teammate Connor McDavid at $12.5 million. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs has a contract that kicked in this year paying him $13.5 million, which puts him in the number one position. Draisaitl's new deal will beat that by $500k.
