Though a long road remains before answers begin to emerge regarding the five players connected with the 2018 World Juniors scandal, each appears to be on a different path in light of the charges. Dillon Dube and Michael McLeod have chosen overseas duty in the KHL, while Carter Hart and Cal Foote are not entirely shutting the door to heading back onto the ice.
Alex Formenton has taken a very different path, however. From being a talented young hockey player to reportedly hauling cargo in a blue-collar job, he has separated himself from the world of professional sports altogether. His shift seems indicative of acceptance of his situation, even as the legal proceedings play out.
Some critics have complained the players still remain in the hockey ecosystem and questioned the leniency of the system, as many have wanted them out completely. While the departure of Alex Formenton from the game was not strictly his own volition, as he was still playing in Switzerland, whereas the others were in the NHL, for all five it is uncertain what their futures may be, up until the decision is made on their case.
In case they are found guilty, then their hockey careers could be gone forever. So far, a judge has exempted them from the pre-trial hearings on account of "compelling economic reasons," and that leaves all other things pending until further notice, before the actual trial begins in 2025.
