The NHL is reportedly considering major schedule changes, starting in 2026, when a new CBA begins, to address concerns about the season extending too far into the summer.

Tons of people on social media recently have been debating how long the NHL season runs as a whole, and they're saying they think the season should extend longer into the summer.
LeBrun hinted that the NHL are currently considering the possibility of adding more regular season games into the official season schedule.
If these discussions lead to changes, the regular season would increase to 84 games per team, with a corresponding reduction in preseason games. The proposed adjustments aim to start the regular season in early October and award the Stanley Cup in early June, shortening the NHL calendar by approximately two weeks.
"Some non free-agent news:
The NHL and NHLPA have had very preliminary discussions on what a new NHL calendar could look like. Wouldn't take effect until next CBA 2 years from now.
What's being discussed:
_ Move start of reg season up to very early Oct;
_ Award Cup earlier in June;
_ Cut pre-season to 4 games per team;
_ 84-game regular season;
Basically moving things up 2 weeks or so.
It's not awarding the Cup by May 31 but it sure beats what it looks like now!
Again, these are preliminary discussions. Let's see where it goes."

The possible changes, though in early stages, represent a significant shift in the NHL's approach to scheduling. The goal is to balance the season's length with giving teams adequate preparation time while also enhancing the overall experience for fans and players.
